Nationals Recall Outfielder One Year After Leg Injury

September 25, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

The Washington Nationals made some roster moves on Tuesday, as reported by the Washington Post’s Andrew Golden. Washington recalled outfielder Stone Garrett from Triple-A Rochester for his MLB season debut, one year after he suffered a serious leg injury. Additionally, the Nationals placed infielder Andres Chaparro on the Paternity List.

Good for Garrett, who got injured last August in New York and will now get an opportunity in the majors this year.

Nationals Stone Garrett: Back in Big Leagues

Garrett, 28, will make his first appearance for the Nationals since fracturing his left fibula last season. His injury occurred during a game against the New York Yankees when he banged his leg against the right field wall. Before the injury, he had a .269 batting average with 17 doubles, nine home runs, 40 RBI, three stolen bases, and 40 runs in 89 games. This season, Garrett played 79 games between Double-A and Triple-A, hitting .249 with 13 doubles, three home runs, and 22 RBI.

In the eighth round of the 2014 MLB Draft, the Miami Marlins selected Garrett from George Ranch High School. The outfielder spent six seasons within the Marlins’ farm system. He then signed a minor league contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks in March 2021. Garrett eventually made his MLB debut with the Diamondbacks in August of 2022. In 27 games, he hit .276 with four home runs, 10 RBI, and three stolen bases. He was designated for assignment and signed with the Nationals after the season.

Chaparro, 25, has made an impact since Washington acquired him at the trade deadline from Arizona for reliever Dylan Floro. The trade has worked out in Washington’s favor, with the rookie infielder hitting .215 with four home runs and 15 RBI in 33 games. Meanwhile, Floro was designated for assignment and released by the Diamondbacks on September 17.
