Nationals Shake Up Pitching Staff as Right-Hander Returns

September 21, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

The Washington Nationals announced multiple moves regarding pitchers on Friday. Washington reinstated right-hander Trevor Williams from the 60-day injured list to start against the Cubs. The two other moves were reliever Zach Brzykcy getting optioned to Triple-A Rochester and Joan Adon being placed on the 60-day IL. These moves were made with just over a week left in the season for the 68-85 Nationals.

Trevor Williams Returns to Nationals

Williams takes the mound for the Nationals today, making his highly anticipated return from a 3 1/2-month stint on the injured list due to a flexor strain in his elbow. Before the injury, the 32-year-old boasted an impressive 5-0 record and 2.22 ERA in 11 starts. With free agency looming, Williams’ final two outings this season will be crucial in showcasing his value. Having signed a two-year, $13 million contract with the Nationals before the 2023 season, he’s looking to demonstrate his durability and effectiveness.

A seasoned pitcher with eight years of MLB experience, Williams has also suited up for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Chicago Cubs, and New York Mets since his debut in 2016.

Brzykcy, 25, made his major league debut on Sept. 1 against the Cubs. However, the right-handed reliever did not live up to expectations compared to his performance in the minors. In six games, he posted an abysmal 14.29 ERA and a 2.12 WHIP in 5 2/3 innings pitched. In Washington’s farm system, Brzykcy has excelled: 2-0, 2.04 ERA, 0.82 WHIP, and 43 strikeouts.

Adon, 26, has struggled in eight appearances: 6.75 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, six strikeouts in 10 2/3 innings pitched. He was previously placed on the 15-day IL in late August due to a bicep injury. Adon’s career 6.66 ERA belies his strikeout ability, having fanned 118 batters and showcased his raw talent.
