I find it astonishing anyone has expectations of accountability regarding Baltimore nonprofits funded by Mayor Brandon Scott’s office (“‘Potentially some money missing:’ Baltimore nonprofit has ‘sloppy’ finances, experts say,” Feb. 21). Accountability is not a value that is stressed in Baltimore — by the people or the government. Here are some examples of a lack of accountability by Baltimore’s government and its citizens.
Baltimore sued the tobacco companies because people smoked, even after being aware it was unhealthy.
Baltimore sued the gun manufacturers because people in Baltimore resort to gun violence to address even the smallest disagreement or perceived disrespect.
Baltimore sued pharmaceutical companies and many pharmacies because people in Baltimore abused prescription drugs.
Baltimore sued several financial companies for predatory lending because people in Baltimore borrowed money at high interest rates that they couldn’t repay.
Baltimore sued fossil fuel companies because people in Baltimore used fuels and contributed to climate change.
Baltimore is suing online gambling companies because people in Baltimore gamble above their means and get into debt.
Expecting any accountability in Baltimore is a fool’s errand.
