FREDERICK COUNTY — A man was arrested after allegedly threatening mass violence at a children’s camp held at Emmitsburg Elementary School, according to the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office.
Frederick County officers arrived at the schoolat 10:11 a.m. on Tuesday after receiving reports of a threat. A man had come to the school’s playground and made violent threats to children and staff, according to witnesses.
The camp was immediately placed in lockdown mode, and children and staff were taken inside the school building.
Benjamin Dewees, 28, of Emmitsburg, was arrested shortly after on West Main Street.
Dewees assaulted two deputies as he was being taken into custody, according to FCSO officials. One deputy was treated, and later released, from an area hospital. The second deputy was uninjured.
During an interview with investigators, FSCO officials say that Dewees admitted to making the threats.
Dewees faces several charges, including threat of mass violence, two counts of second-degree assault, disturbing the peace/disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace with loud noise, attempting to disturb school operations, and disorderly conduct.
Dewee is being held without bond at the Frederick County Adult Detention Center.
