An argument outside of a Baltimore Family Dollar store ended in murder earlier this year, and now the U.S. Marshals Service is searching for a former employee.
Braxton Day, 39, of Baltimore, is wanted on several charges, including first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and three firearm-related offenses.
The homicide occurred in South Baltimore’s Cherry Hill neighborhood the morning of May 31, 2025.
Investigators said an officer on routine patrol heard a gunshot and found a man on the ground in the 600 block of Cherry Hill Road with a gunshot wound to his chest. The man, later identified as 42-year-old Bryan Breland, was rushed to an area hospital, where medical officials pronounced him dead.
According to court documents, detectives found a single .40 caliber shell casing in front of the Family Dollar store, as well as a magazine containing three .40 caliber live rounds.
Investigators said that surveillance footage shows the victim initiating a fight with Day outside of his job at the Family Dollar store. Authorities have not said why they believe the victim did this, but said Day pulled out a gun and shot Breland and then ran from the scene.
In court documents, investigators said Day threw the gun under a car, then took off his jacket and bag and put the items in a cellar door of a home behind the store, on Hillview Road.
Investigators went to that home and later recovered the jacket and bag,” said Jennifer Mazza, deputy marshal with the Marshals Service. “They also recovered a magazine with 28 live rounds, and a Family Dollar work badge.”
Investigators said witnesses were shown still surveillance images of Day and helped identify him as the suspect in this case.
Court records show Day has a criminal history that includes prior arrests for assault, misdemeanor drug offenses, and felony theft.
“It’s unclear why the victim initiated a fight, but we need to locate Day so he can answer to these charges,” Mazza said. “This was a murder that was carried out in broad daylight, and in an area where innocent people were shopping.”
Investigators say Day should be considered armed and dangerous.
Anyone with information concerning Day’s whereabouts is asked to contact the Marshals Service at 202-819-5058 or Baltimore Police at 410-396-2100.
