Westminster Mayor Mona Becker was reelected Tuesday, defeating challenger Nicholas Thomas by more than a 4-1 margin.
Of the 827 residents who voted in the election, 678 voted for Becker while 143 voted for Thomas, according to results posted by the Westminster Board of Elections on the city’s Facebook page.
“Thank you Westminster! 82% of the vote! Looking forward to another four years,” Becker posted to her Facebook page Tuesday night.
Common Council members Tony Chiavacci and Dan Hoff were also reelected after running unopposed for their two seats. A total of 702 votes were cast for Chiavacci and 665 people voted for Hoff.
Becker first won the mayor’s seat in 2021 by a nearly 2-to-1 margin. In that election 1,619 ballots were cast. Becker was the first woman to win the mayor’s office; she is also the city’s first openly gay mayor.
Kale Mathias, 75, voted at the John Street Quarters of the Westminster Volunteer Fire Department Tuesday afternoon. He said he voted for the incumbents because he likes how Westminster is being run.
“They’ve all done a good job,” Mathias said. “It’s not easy in today’s world, but the festivals keep the town interesting, and everything seems to work.”
Lee Chappell, 68, voted at the Westminster Municipal Pool for Thomas and Hoff.
“This is an election to get transparency in our government,” Chappell said. “We want transparency and everything in the open.”
Chappell said his granddaughter was excited to accompany him to the polls.
“She’s only 2 1/2, so she doesn’t understand, but she at least gets to go through the motions of pushing the button,” he said.
Marihelen Stringham, 71, said she voted for Becker on Tuesday.
“She’s fantastic,” Stringham said. “I’ve lived in Westminster for four years, and I really love it. She seems to have good priorities as far as building community and communicating with people, and I just like her world view.”
Tim Evers, 77, was motivated to vote because his wife is a fan of Becker, although he said he doesn’t follow politics closely.
“I think that the city is operating well,” Evers said.
Noah Tucker, 38, said he voted for Becker because he is happy with the job she has done.
“I’m happy with Mona as our mayor,” Tucker said, “so I just stuck with that.”
