Aberdeen lost in a 1-0 pitchers duel, but the pitching was excellent.
Triple-A: Memphis Redbirds (STL) 9, Norfolk Tides 0
This was a lopsided loss. Memphis scored three runs in the first off starter Thaddeus Ward, who ended up with five ER in three innings on eight hits and four walks. Levi Stoudt gave up a solo home run and two runs. At least Kade Strowd and Cionel Pérez threw scoreless innings. Nick Richmond continued the Tides’ bad run with three walks in one inning of relief, all three of which scored.
The Tides had just three hits on the day, but one of them was a double by Samuel Basallo. Terrin Vavra also doubled and walked and Liván Soto hit a single. Jeremiah Jackson walked. Heston Kjerstad went 0-for-4.
Double-A: Chesapeake Baysox 12, Erie SeaWolves (DET) 4
This was a weirdly lopsided box score, although the two teams were nearly matched in hits, at twelve and eleven. Reed Trimble singled in a run in the first and scored on a Silas Ardoin sac fly. Ardoin hit a second sac fly in the third inning. In the fourth, Creed Willems hit a two-run single before a wild pitch scored a sixth Chesapeake run. The Baysox scored three more in the sixth on a Luis Valdez triple and an Enrique Bradfield single. Jalen Vasquez made it 10-2 with an RBI single. Creed Willems and Max Wagner extended the lead to 12-3 with an RBI groundout and single, respectively. That was enough runs for the day.
Baysox pitchers weren’t aces but they were definitely good enough, thanks to the hitters’ efforts. Braxton Bragg continues to stand out, with 4.1 innings of one-run ball, to give him a 1.85 ERA. Robinson Martínez was ineffective, giving up a run in 0.2 innings on two hits and two walks. Blake Money allowed a homer and two runs in three, but ended up with the win due to the ways of baseball box scores. Preston Johnson walked two in a scoreless ninth.
High-A: Brooklyn Cyclones (NYM) 1, Aberdeen IronBirds 0
If you like pitchers duels, this was a game for you. Aberdeen starter Michael Forret pitched a brilliant five scoreless innings, allowing just a single. Forret is having a standout season, with a 1.34 ERA and 0.65 WHIP in nine games. Eccel Correa was excellent, too, but his eighth-inning solo home run was the difference maker, and he took the loss.
There wasn’t, as a result, much to report on on offense for Aberdeen, with just two hits by Angel Tejada and a rehabbing Tyler O’Neill. Yay! Can he also play catcher?
Low-A: Hickory Crawdads (TEX) 8, Delmarva Shorebirds 5
Some bad relief pitching sunk the Shorebirds. Chase Allsup was good overall, giving his team 4.2 innings and allowing three runs, one unearned. Allsup left with two one in the fifth inning on a throwing error and walk, and alas, tall guy Jared Beck walked the next three batters, scoring two more. Luis Beltrán allowed a run in 1.1 innings, and Simon Leandro coughed up three more runs.
It was a good day for the bottom half of the Shorebirds lineup as Braylin Tavera, Elis Cuevas, and Luis Almeyda went a combined 6-for-12 with four walks. Shorebirds hitters combined for nine walks.
