Norfolk were the only losers on yesterday’s minor league docket

Triple-A: Gwinnett Stripers (ATL) 6, Norfolk Tides 4

Chayce McDermott was back to his old ways last night with a three-run, four-inning performance. He walked more batters (five) than innings he pitched (four). He also allowed five hits for a cool game WHIP of 2.5. McDermott’s relief, Levi Stoudt, also gave up three runs, took the loss.

On offense, three of the four Tides’ runs came in to score on two home runs by Jeremiah Jackson. Jackson racked up three hit in the day. The Tides’ fourth run scored on a Terrin Vavra single which knocked in Samuel Basallo. Basallo reached base four times with a single and three walks. Heston Kjerstad had two hits.

Double-A: Chesapeake Baysox 4, Altoona Curve (PIT) 3 – F/10

The Baysox jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the third inning and then slowly frittered it away through innings 4-9. But all’s well that ends well, as Reed Trimble singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 10th.

Silas Ardoin and Douglas Hodo hit back-to-back doubles to give the Baysox a 1-0 lead, then added two more in the third with help from the Curve’s defense. With the bases loaded on singles from Noelberth Romero and Reed Trimble, and a walk from the rehabbing Tyler O’Neill, Max Wagner hit a ground ball to second base. Altoona’s second baseman threw the ball away and two runs scored.

Starter Levi Wells had a nice night. He pitched five shutout innings with just one hit and one walk. After relief pitcher Robinson Martínez allowed two runs in the sixth, Kyle Virbitsky gave up a home run in the ninth to tie the game.

Box Score

Luis De León completed 5.1 innings with five hits and a walk. He struck out five and allowed two runs. His relief pitching combined to allow three more runs, but the offense did enough to stay on top.

That started with a three-run sixth inning with RBI singles from Vance Honeycutt and Aron Estrada and a sac fly from Aneudis Mordán. In the next inning, Austin Overn singled in a run. In the eighth, Estrada walked and scored on a wild pitch.

Honeycutt and Estrada each had one hit and reached via walk. Overn had two hits at leadoff.

Thomas Sosa was the offensive star for the Shorebirds, He had just one hit, but it was a big one; a three-run homer. He also walked twice and knocked in a run on a fielder’s choice. The 7-8-9 hitters had two hits apiece, and 18-year-old Joshua Liranzo had two RBI singles.
