Plus the traded players have arrived.
Triple-A: Norfolk Tides 9, Memphis Redbirds (STL) 8 – F/10
The Tides scored their first six runs of the game on just six hits as they found nearly every way to score without getting a hit that they could. Reed Trimble hit a sac fly. Samuel Basallo grounded into a bases-loaded double play and got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Dylan Beavers took a bases-loaded walk. TT Bowens knocked in the fifth and sixth runs with a single to break the streak.
Thaddeus Ward started and was not good. He gave up five runs in just 3.1 innings with seven hits and three walks. Keegan Gillies and Chayce McDermott were good in relief, and the Tides held a 6-5 lead into the eighth before Matt Bowman allowed the tying run to score.
In the bottom of the 10th, the Tides scored three runs on three singles from Emmanuel Rivera, Basallo, and José Barrero. Barrero’s hit walked it off.
Beavers was hitless in the game but took four walks. Jud Fabian had three walks of his own, Basallo had just the one single. And Vimael Machín continued his hot play with a three-hit game.
Double-A: New Hampshire Fisher Cats (TOR) 5, Chesapeake Baysox 4 – F/8
It was doubleheader day in Bowie after a July 31st rainout. Nestor German started game one and had an excellent outing. In 5.1 innings, German allowed just one run on two hits and two walks. He struck out nine, which makes a total of 19 over his last two starts.
The pitching went south after German exited with relief pitchers Gerald Ogando and Daniel Lloyd giving up two runs each.
Aron Estrada continued his strong start to double-A ball with two hits, including a triple. He knocked in one. And new Oriole Brian Butterworth made a good first impression. He went 2-for-4 with an RBI single and RBI double. Butterworth was part of the Ryan O’Hearn/Ramón Laureano trade. Frederick Bencosme was hitless but had an RBI with a sac fly.
Double-A: Fisher Cats 6, Baysox 0
Levi Wells started and only lasted two innings plus two batters. In the second, he allowed a run on two hits, a walk, and a wild pitch. In the third, the first two batters reached and he was pulled. Both runners scored. None of the pitchers were helped by the defense, which committed four errors and allowed two unearned runs.
The offense was MIA in this one with just three hits. It’s never good to have fewer hits than errors; that’s what I always say. Butterworth and Jalen Vazquez singled, while Anthony Servideo had his 2nd triple of the season.
High-A: Aberdeen IronBirds 6, Bowling Green Hot Rods (TBR) 0
This was just a good game all around. Alex Pham, who is on rehab assignment from Chesapeake, pitched 3.1 innings with one hit and one walk. Luis De León finished the game with three hits in five shutout innings. He struck out six.
Maikol Hernández hit his first high-A home run, a two-run shot. Austin Overn reached base four times with three hits and a walk. He knocked in two and stole three bases to make 43 on the year. Ethan Anderson had an RBI single and sac fly, and Griff O’Farrell singled and doubled at leadoff.
Victor Figueroa, another part of the O’Hearn/Laureano trade, made his Aberdeen debut with a single and a walk. Yasmil Bucce went 0-for-3 with a walk.
Low-A: Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (CWS) 7, Delmarva Shorebirds 0
It was not a good day for Chase Allsup, who allowed five runs in just 1.2 innings. He walked four, including three in the second inning, to load the bases for Abraham Nunez, who hit a grand slam.
Nate George did Nate George things at leadoff with three hits and a walk. Cobb Hightower, who just arrived from the (you guessed it) O’Hearn/Laureano trade, had a single. The 18-year-old Andrew Tess, in his fourth game with the Shorebirds, walked and doubled. None of this was enough for the Shorebirds to score any runs.
