Orioles to Acquire Former All-Star Left-Hander from Marlins

July 31, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

The Baltimore Orioles are acquiring left-hander Trevor Rogers from the Miami Marlins for Connor Norby, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. Additional reporting from The Miami Herald’s Craig Mish has outfielder Kyle Stowers also heading to Miami in the trade.

Rogers, 26, has a 4.53 ERA in 21 starts this season. However, he has performed better of late, posting a 3.17 ERA and 19 strikeouts over his last 48 innings pitched. Rogers emerged as a trade candidate for teams who were unwilling to meet the demands of some of the market’s top pitchers. It’s the second trade Baltimore has made for the rotation after they acquired Zach Eflin from the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Marlins have continued their summer sell-off that began with the Luis Arraez trade in May. In the last few days, the Marlins traded Jazz Chisholm Jr. and A.J. Puk. Closer Tanner Scot is most certainly to be moved before the 6.p.m. ET trade deadline. As for the 2021 National League Rookie of the Year finalist, he missed the majority of the 2022 season due to both back spasms and a lat strain and time during the 2023 season with a biceps strain. He has been healthy this season as he owns an 18 percent strikeout percentage and a 9.7 percent walk rate in 105 1/3 innings this year.

Norby, 24, was ranked as Baltimore’s No. 5 prospect by MLB Pipeline and his MLB debut with the club this season. In nine games, Norby was hitting .188/.188/.406 with two home runs. However, he hit .297/.389/.519 with 16 home runs in over 80 games at Triple-A Norfolk.

Stowers, 26, made his MLB debut in 2022 and has been between the major and minor league clubs over the past three seasons. He’s taken 168 plate appearances and batted .229/.274/.369 with the Orioles. Although, he carries a career .253/.351/.519 batting line with 57 home runs in 1,047 plate appearances for Norfolk.

More to come.
