Brittney Griner scored 30 points for the Americans in the win. Washington Mystics center Tina Charles got her third gold medal in the win.
The USA Basketball women’s national team won 90-75 against Japan on Sunday morning in the gold medal game. The win gives the Americans their seventh consecutive gold medal, dating back to the 1996 games in Atlanta.
Team USA never trailed in the game as they shot 54 percent from the field and held Japan to 36 percent shooting over all and under 26 percent shooting from three, one of their traditional strengths. Brittney Griner led the Americans with a 30 point performance. A’ja Wilson added 19 points and Breanna Stewart added 14 more.
Washington Mystics center Tina Charles played 10 minutes in the game but was scoreless. She won her third Olympic gold medal today in this game. Guard Ariel Atkins scored 2 points in 3 minutes of action and now has her first Olympic gold medal.
The 2020 gold medal is also the fifth one that Seattle Storm guard Sue Bird and Phoenix Mercury guard Diana Taurasi have won, dating back to the 2004 Olympics in Athens. This is likely their last Olympic Games and it will likely be very difficult for future players to match this mark.
For Japan, Rui Machida was held to just 6 assists and she scored 8 points. Maki Takada led their scorers with 17 points.
