Knicks Shopping Big Man Ahead Of Trade Deadline

January 14, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

New York Knicks center Jericho Sims guards Charlotte Hornets center Mark Williams

The New York Knicks appear willing to trade at least one of their centers. Already rumored to be willing to part ways with former starter Mitchell Robinson, Stefan Bondy of the New York Post reports that the oft-discussed franchise is shopping backup big man Jericho Sims.

Knicks Shopping Jericho Sims Ahead Of Trade Deadline

Sims, the 58th pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, has had his name called often by Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau in his short career. Over the past four seasons, he’s played 10+ minutes in 50 games, 20+ minutes in 39 games, and 30+ minutes in seven games. Notably, New York has managed a 20-15 record when he starts.

Sims is being shopped by the Knicks ahead of next month’s trade deadline, according to multiple sources. However, this is an injury absence and not related to that. https://t.co/kSEWYWIg9A

At 6-foot-10, Sims isn’t necessarily towering over players in the paint. However, the Knicks rely on him because of his athleticism and anticipation. An underrated rim-protector whose footwork on the perimeter has been praised by Thibodeau, he can be the team’s best defender at the center position on any given night.

He still needs to improve his overall defensive awareness. Still, New York could do a lot worse.

What’s His Value?

As the Texas product is in the final year of his contract, he’s a particularly attractive trade target. Though a more than serviceable center, he’s unlikely to command top dollar in free agency. Prospective teams that are cap conscious but need a defensive upgrade or depth at the pivot should be giving Knicks president Leon Rose a call and leaving a voicemail if he doesn’t pick up.

With that in mind, Sims is on a minimum contract. As a result, the most valuable asset New York receives for Sims in a standalone deal might be draft capital. Now, draft picks can help any organization, even if they’re just a trade chip. Nevertheless, title-contenders like the Knicks usually prefer to get established talent. Thus, Sims is more of a sweetener than the main dish.

He could be attached to a deal headlined by Robinson, who makes $14.3 million this season. He could even be part of a trade featuring Precious Achiuwa, who’s on an expiring $6 million contract. With the play of Karl-Anthony Towns and 2024 No. 58 pick Ariel Hukporti, both appear expendable.

That being said, there’s speculation the Knicks have interest in Charlotte Hornets center Nick Richards, and that Washington Wizards center Jonas Valanciunas is on their radar as well. If so, Achiuwa makes more sense for the Hornets, as his shooting ability can help open up their offense. With his age, he would also make sense for the Wizards. However, with Alex Sarr launching from the perimeter, Robinson could be a better complement in their center rotation.
