The Washington Mystics dropped a heartbreaker to the Atlanta Dream on June 20, falling 92–91 in one of their most competitive games of the season on Friday night.
Shakira Austin led all scorers with 28 points and 10 rebounds, asserting herself in the paint and nearly willing Washington to a comeback win. In addition, Brittney Sykes added 21 points and Sonia citron added 17 more. The Mystics shot an efficient 52.6 percent from the field and held a 29–23 rebounding edge, but 13 turnovers and late-game fouls proved costly.
Allisha Gray led Atlanta with 18 points. Though the Mystics lost by just one point tonight, they were were losing for most of the game, in particular during the second half, when they were down by as many as 16 points.
Despite the loss, the Mystics showed signs of growth and toughness. Austin’s performance was a bright spot, but Washington will need to clean up turnovers and foul discipline to flip close games into wins moving forward.
