Wizards May Trade Rising Veteran Big Man Before Deadline

January 24, 2026 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

With less than two weeks until the deadline, the Washington Wizards have been the subject of numerous trade rumors. From clinging to the possibility of getting Jonathan Kuminga, a “long-shot” opportunity to land Zion Williamson, to possibly landing great role pieces in Jerami Grant or Immanuel Quickley. However, in a trade, there’s always a give-and-take, and Wizards backup big man Marvin Bagley III may be the give for Washington.

Wizards May Trade Rising Veteran Big Man Before Deadline

Now past the midway point of the season, Washington is eyeing any potential trade that could help them compete once newly acquired Trae Young comes back from injury. With that, Washington has a few pieces that would go a long way in some of the trades mentioned above. Per NBA Reporter Evan Sidery, Bagley may top the long list of Wizards’ candidates.

Bagley’s Reemergence

Bagley has had a stellar campaign in his second stint with Washington. Through his 36 appearances this season, Bagley is averaging 10 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.5 assists. Bagley is shooting career-highs from the field at 61.9% and effective field goal percentage at 63.4%. He’s top 20 league-wide in offensive rebounds per game (2.6) and top 15 in offensive rating (128.3).

While Bagley’s season numbers are decent and a great improvement over last year, his starting numbers are even better. In seven starts this season, the veteran has averaged 13.9 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 1.7 assists. These appearances include two double-doubles: a 23-point and 14-rebound performance against the Indiana Pacers and a 15-point performance with 13 rebounds against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Washington would win two of their total 10 games on the season with Bagley in the starting five. He wasn’t just a help in times of need, especially when Alex Sarr went out with an injury, but he’s been one of the best players off the bench around the entire league.

Unfortunate Situation

Bagley’s recent rise has put his trade value much higher than in previous seasons. Unfortunately, Washington doesn’t have much of a choice; his value could provide a great return. That being said, Bagley may be having deja vu, as this exact situation happened last season.

While he wasn’t playing well, Bagley found himself in the middle of trade talks as the deadline was approaching last season. In a three-team deal, Washington sent Memphis Bagley, Johnny Davis, and a second-round pick. In return, Memphis sent the Wizards Marcus Smart and a 2025 NBA Draft first-round pick. That pick, number 18, was used to select Walter Clayton Jr, who was then traded for the 21st selection, picking Will Riley.

Then, in July, Bagley decided to re-sign with Washington. In turn, the trade would end up becoming a three-team deal for picks. None of the traded players stayed on their new team after last season. Bagley hasn’t wasted his new opportunity in D.C, but he’s played so well he’s bound to once again be sent away.

The Last Word

Washington’s decision is almost obvious. While Bagley has played well, the chance to get a potential pick or younger prospect is almost too good to pass up. Whatever happens, Bagley’s role will be much better than his short stint in Memphis.
