Wizards Rookie Already Putting His Name in Record Books

October 25, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

The Washington Wizards may have drafted a true star in Tre Johnson III. He was labeled as one of the best shooters in the 2025 NBA draft and has showcased his shotmaking ability early in his NBA career. Through his first two NBA games, Johnson has put himself in some of the rookie record books.

Wizards’ Tre Johnson Already Putting His Name In Record Books

Johnson was selected sixth overall by Washington in the 2025 NBA draft class, a draft position that indicates the franchise hopes he can eventually become one of the main leaders of the team. Keeping that in perspective, his elite shooting ability offered a different type of potential compared to much of the class. Now, in just the first two games, he’s proven his supporters right by lighting up the nets.

All of which begs the question: could Johnson record record numbers like the 2024 trio?

Elite Shot-Maker

In his first NBA game, Johnson finished with 16 points, five rebounds, two assists, a block, and a steal. With that stat line, Johnson became just the second player in franchise history with at least 15+ points, 5+ rebounds, 1+ blocks, and 1+ steals in their league debut (h/t Wizards PR). The last and only other Wizards player to finish with those numbers in their debut was former forward Tom Gugliotta in 1992.

As a one-time All-Star, Gugliotta isn’t the most elite company Johnson could keep. However, Johnson has another record that could keep growing if he keeps hitting his shots.

Throughout Johnson’s first two games, he’s hit an incredible seven 3-pointers while shooting 50% from beyond the arc. As a result, he’s become one of five rookies in NBA history to convert at least three 3-point attempts in their first two career games (h/t Sportradar and Wizards PR).

This streak could certainly continue. To start his career, Johnson has averaged 7.0 3-point attempts per game to start his career. There’s no need for him to lower the volume if he’s going to keep ripping the cord.

Johnson Addresses The Big Issue

Johnson no doubt has showcased his qualities as an NBA-level scorer. Yet, Washington also addressed what was arguably the last season’s biggest problem when they drafted him. Not only are his records impressive, but his consistency is something to behold for Wizards fans that witnessed some of the worst offensive stretches in franchise history last season.

In 2024-25, the Wizards finished 28th in field goal percentage and 29th in 3-point percentage. Johnson may boost those numbers drastically. In fact, he could easily become the most efficient player on the roster by the end of the season.

The Last Word

Johnson is a problem-solver with the records to back it. Now, it’s all about consistency, which was another issue the Wizards faced last season. That being said, not only is Johnson showing his effectiveness scoring the ball, but other members of the young core are as well.

It may be too soon to tell. However, there has to be a certain amount of optimism that the young core can figure it out, building off their great start. Should they do that, they’ll be a contender sooner rather than later.
