Tonight against the St. Louis Blues, history was made for the Washington Capital superstar. The Great 8, Alex Ovechkin, who was already the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer, has hit the 900-goal mark. It has long been a significant achievement to hit any of the centennial values, most significantly for normal people 500, for superheroes like Ovi or perhaps Auston Matthews, the number is more like (or was) 800.
Alex Ovechkin becomes the first player in NHL history with 900 goals.

Washington Capital Alex Ovechkin Scores Number 900
Fitting really. For a player who has a trademark, top of the opposite circle, one-time move. His 900th NHL regular season goal, is a no-look, behind the back, backhander, into the gaping cage. It would be the eventual game winner in a 6 – 1 drubbing of the Blues. It really shows, Ovechkin does it all.
What can you say about the great Ovi that hasn’t already been said. One of the most recognizable stats for him is hits, wait what? Hey, he may be first all time for goals, but he’s third, and trending to eventually take the lead, in career hits. However, as we enter the twilight of the legend’s career, it is hard to predict what will happen. Ovi pretty well has achieved all there is to in the NHL. He won a Stanley Cup and countless other individual awards. Ovechkin is a nine-time Maurice Richard Trophy winner.
It was only a couple games ago, that Ovechkin hit 1,500 regular season games. In doing so, he became the eighth player all time to achieve the feat with a single NHL franchise.
Ovechkin’s Amazing Career Goal-Scoring Statistics
If you study Ovechkin’s goal statistics, the symmetry is somewhat poetic. One stat is if you averaged his career statistics over an 82-game season, he would have 49 goals. Wow! 50 is fairly uncommon, all time and also, in recent times, too. Although great players have shown that 60 is more than achievable. Also, 326 power play goals and 137 game-winning goals make him the all time leader on those scoring records as well.
It has been impressive under head coach Spencer Carbery’s regime how successful the Caps have been. They are leading the entire NHL in fewest goals-allowed-per-game. That’s has made this time of Ovechkin’s greatest scoring achievements a good, all-around time in Washington. It’s not only win-win, all hockey fans win in the end, witnessing such prolonged greatness. That alone is why Matthews will take a while to challenge the career numbers, is because Ovechkin was very consistent, in terms of games played.
