Jermel Thomas, the No. 128 overall prospect in the 2026 class, has committed to St. Louis, he told ZAGSBLOG. The 6-foot-2 guard out of Our Saviour Lutheran School (NY) chose St. Louis over his other two finalists Providence and Seton Hall.
“I chose St. Louis because the coaching staff came to all my live period games, the head coach,” Thomas said.
The point guard took an official visit to St. Louis over this past weekend, and it didn’t take him long after to settle on the Billikens.
“The school really loves me,” Thomas said. “I like their play style. They have a lot of pick-and-roll and I can play off that. They let you do iso quite a few times, so yeah. I feel like it matches my game.”
This summer, Thomas was a a standout on the Under Armour circuit for the Riverside Hawks. He averaged 11.2 points, 3.9 assists and 3.0 rebounds and particularly took his game to the next level in July, having several big-time performances in front of college coaches during the live periods.
Thomas said his speed separates him from other prospects. He excels as a downhill driver and making plays off the dribble.
“My shooting got way better, and I can pass,” Thomas said. “That’s why they call me Magic Mel. I pass like Magic Johnson.”
The relationship Thomas built with head coach Josh Schertz was a big factor in his decision.
“He really loves me,” Thomas said. “He’s always going to keep it 100 with you. He just wants everybody to be great on his team. He don’t just care about one person, it’s everybody.”
What will Thomas bring to St. Louis?
“I’m just competitive,” Thomas said. “I want to win. I want to be a dog. I want to do whatever it takes for the team, if it’s defense, scoring or passing and making my teammates score.”
