Florida State landed a commitment from a near seven-footer in Marcis Ponder on Tuesday, he announced. Ponder – a 7-foot-tall, 330-pound forward, has one of the most physically imposing figures in the nation. With his huge frame, he told ZAGSBLOG that some people call him “Baby Shaq,” because of his dominant ways in the paint.
A member of the class of 2026, Ponder attends the Gillion Academy (VA) and also plays for Team Breakdown of the P32 League.
Ponder talked about the Florida State program with ZAGSBLOG in January, offering his thoughts on its play style and its similarities with his old high school team:
“I love their playstyle. It’s the same defense my coach plays here [at West Oaks]. So I love how their defense [operates]. Everything goes through a big before a shot goes up, so I like stuff like that.”
He also said that he is an avid cooker and hopes to study culinary arts in college.
He is Florida State’s second commit in the class of 2026, joining four-star Jasen Lopez.
Ponder is rated as a four-star recruit and is ranked as the No. 83 overall player in the class of 2026.
