Former Georgetown basketball standout Kevin Braswell has passed away at the age of 46.

Braswell, who played point guard for the Hoyas from 1998-2002 before embarking on a lengthy overseas playing career, had most recently been the head coach of Utsunomiya Brex, a Japanese professional team. Braswell was an assistant with the club last season, and also had extensive experience coaching in New Zealand.

Utsunomiya Brex confirmed Braswell’s passing in a statement on X/Twitter earlier today.

“We would like to express our deepest gratitude for the kindness shown to us during his lifetime and to inform you of his passing,” the translated statement reads in part.

“Since his hospitalization on January 17, the entire team has continued to support him, hoping for a speedy recovery, but his wish has not been granted and we are filled with great loss and deep sadness.”

Utsunomiya Brex also thanked Braswell for his effort and dedication over the last two seasons and offered their “deepest condolences for his passion and dedication.”

A native of Baltimore, Braswell was a member of the Big East All-Rookie Team in 1998-99. He was a second-team All-Big East selection in 2000-01 and was named third-team all-conference the following season as a senior.

“Prayers to the family of Georgetown men’s basketball alum Kevin Braswell. He will be missed – forever a Hoya. #HoyaSaxa,” said the official Georgetown men’s basketball X/Twitter account Monday afternoon.

Braswell finished his career for the Hoyas with averages of 13.6 points, 5.4 assists and 3.9 rebounds per game. He helped lead the program to the Sweet Sixteen of the 2001 NCAA Tournament and a trip to the NIT in 2000.

After leaving Georgetown, Braswell had a successful career playing in Poland, Bosnia, France, the Dominican Republic, Russia, Italy, Israel, Turkey, Australia and New Zealand. He later won two league championships as head coach of the Wellington Saints in New Zealand.
