NOTES

Georgetown is a 9-point favorite tonight against a Big East opponent. The last time Georgetown was favored by nine or more points against a major conference opponent was, of course, also against DePaul back on 2/22/17. I still get a sick feeling remembering this game as the Hoyas (-13.5) lost outright. I remember walking back to the press conference room and thinking that for the first time this might actually be the end of JT3’s time as the Hoyas coach.

Just off the top of my head I can recall a few details about this one. Georgetown was definitely up double digits in the first half. Thanks to some patented scoring droughts the game was tied in the closing seconds before Jessie Govan air balled a 3-pointer from the top of the key. Akoy Agau eventually fouled Billy Garrett, who had dribbled the length of the court, with something like .1 seconds left. Garrett made both FTs to win the game and, basically, change history.

WHAT’S AT STAKE

Georgetown: Getting back above .500 in the league. The NCAA dreams were nice for a few minutes but that was always a longshot. Real progress will be measured by finishing around .500 in the league and keeping a large part of the roster together for Ed Cooley’s 3rd season. Winning games at home against teams in the bottom half of the league is necessary to get those 10 BE wins.
