Georgetown Considers Rick Pitino as Ewing’s Replacement

July 25, 2025 by The Spun

After six disappointing seasons, Georgetown has parted ways with head men’s basketball coach and legendary alum Patrick Ewing.

The last eight seasons, including the final two under John Thompson III, have been ugly for the once-proud Hoyas. Georgetown has posted just one winning campaign in that timeframe while earning one NCAA Tournament berth and a trip to the NIT.

Ewing’s replacement might be the most important hire in Washington, D.C. until next year’s presidential election. Georgetown has to get it right, and a slew of people on social media know just the man for the job.

They think the Hoyas should tab Rick Pitino as their next coach.

“If Georgetown wants Pitino it better move fast,” said Seth Davis of The Athletic.

“Rick Pitino to Georgetown. It’s time to bring greatness back to Big East basketball,” one commenter said.

“RICK PITINO SAVE GEORGETOWN,” another added.

“Georgetown go and hire Rick Pitino already,” a third person added.

“Pitino to Georgetown?” a Kansas fan wondered.

Pitino is currently in his third season at Iona, where he’s looking to lead the Gaels to their second NCAA Tournament under his watch.

It is thought that the 70-year-old coach wants one more shot at a major conference job. Will Georgetown be interested?
