John Calipari makes radical suggestion on transfer portal

October 16, 2025 by Zags Blog

Arkansas head coach John Calipari is entering his 34th season as a Division I head coach, and widely considered one of the best recruiters of his coaching generation. Over the past couple months, Calipari has become very vocal about his thoughts on the current landscape of recruiting and the transfer portal.

“We’ve got to say, you’ve got five years, to play four,” Calipari said at SEC Media Day. “If we get those two things in order, we’re on the path to being better. They should be able to transfer. Once without penalty. After that, you can transfer, just you have to sit out.”

On August 27th, on the Nothing Personal Podcast with David Samson, he offered his ideas on how to better regulate the transfer portal frenzy in college basketball.

Calipari doubled down on his ideas yesterday and told reporters that players should be able to transfer once, without a penalty. He thinks that if a player transfers after that, you must be required to sit out a year.

“You could do five to play five. In other words, we’ll give you one more year. You have five, but there are no waivers. If you’re hurt, you gotta leave in five years. If you’re hurt twice, you got to leave,” Calipari said in August. “Now, here’s the other way you could do it. The old way. Five years, to play four. You have five years. That means you can transfer, you can transfer again and sit out. You get your five years. You could redshirt and play four. You could play, get hurt, play three. You could do it that way. But it’s still five years.”

During his press conference, Calipari also talked about his future as a coach and said he will retire before he becomes a transactional coach.

“I want to help 25 to 30 more families,” he said. “The only way you do that is you’re transformational as a coach. You’re not transactional. If I become transactional, I’m going to pay you this to do this and that, then I won’t do this anymore. I don’t need to.”

He also said part of the reason he is still coaching, is to coach with his son, Brad. Brad serves as an assistant coach and the director of on-court player development at Arkansas.
