Jordan Classic: Former Kentucky commit Boogie Fland says John Calipari wants him at Arkansas

NEW YORK — Boogie Fland hasn’t made any firm decisions after re-opening his recruitment, but says former Kentucky coach John Calipari is trying to persuade him to follow the coach to Arkansas.

“Oh yeah, I did [talk to him], he is,” the five-star Archbishop Stepinac (N.Y.) and PSA Cardinals point guard said after helping Team Air Jordan win the Jordan Brand Classic at Barclays Center. Fland improved to 3-0 in All-Star games this spring after previously winning in the McDonald’s All-American Game and the Nike Hoop Summit.

Asked what Calipari’s message was, Fland said, “I mean same thing, same thing he told me when he was at Kentucky.”

Asked if he planned to take a visit to Arkansas, Fland said, “I’m not sure yet. I gotta talk to my people and see.”

When Fland initially committed to Kentucky in October, he told On3: “I chose Kentucky because of the history of success with the guards that have come through there. Coach Cal is going to challenge me to be the best version of myself. He didn’t promise me anything, playing time, shots, etc. He only promised me a chance to compete and fight! The first fight is with myself every day and I’m betting on me! BBN BABY, LET’S DO IT!”

Calipari is also still recruiting former Kentucky commits Jayden Quaintance, Billy Richmond and Karter Knox. Knox will visit Arkansas Monday, per 247Sports.com, while Quaintaince told ZAGSBLOG he will visit Arkansas and Memphis following his recent Louisville trip.

When Fland was committed to Kentucky and Knox was not, Fland told ZAGSBLOG he was recruiting Knox to join him.

“Yeah, we’re trying to get Karter Knox, we’re trying to get Karter Knox,” he said in January at the Hoophall Classic.

Still, the 6-foot-3 Fland still has a long line of suitors.

ESPN’s Paul Biancardi reported that Louisville, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida State, Pittsburgh, St. John’s, Illinois, Providence and Seton Hall had all reached out, as had new Kentucky head coach Mark Pope.

“Just trying to wait and see,” Fland told ZAGSBLOG after the Jordan Game. “I’m trying to talk to my people and see what they’re talking about.”
