LINKS: Georgetown Ranked 13th in Talent by Analytics Expert

Bart Torvik’s analytics indicate some positives and some negatives ahead of the season

Even some of the most loyal followers of college basketball were surprised by a post on X depicting your Georgetown Hoyas as having the 13th most “talented” team in 2024-25 according to basketball analytics website BartTorvik.com.

Indeed, checking in the right spots and sorting by “Projected Effective Talent,” one sees Georgetown ranked rather high considering where fans are used to finding the Hoyas on these analytics sites over the past decade.

Apparently, according to a 2019 blog comment from Torvik, “Talent” is “based on composite recruiting ranks weighted for minutes played.”

The other projected rankings for Georgetown look a bit less friendly, but the talent rating is great! Torvik’s projected record for GU is 15-16 (7-13 in the conference), adjusted offensive efficiency is #65, and projected adjusted defensive efficiency is #153 (still ouch). Other metrics like returning minutes (23.3%), returning possession minutes (30.6%), projected effective experience (1.18), and projected production from transfers (233) seem to be on par with the turnover to an expected new, youthful roster (still not published, yet).

On the other hand, with the nonconference schedule coming out recently, some folks are putting Georgetown in the “WTF” category for their strength of schedule based on another score from Bart Torvik’s metrics, Wins Against Bubble (WAB), which will be on the NCAA Selection Committee’s team sheets for the first time this year.

Georgetown falls into a category labeled WTF https://t.co/95jJqUKTzb

PaintTouches identifies that “WAB is a mathematical formula that aims to project what an average bubble team would do in a given game and, ultimately, how a team compares against others in a season given disparate schedules,” which is a more precise measurement than the traditional strength of schedule.

PaintTouches continues by calculating “numbers are what the WAB scores would be if a team goes undefeated in the noncon” and determining that “The Georgetowns of the worlds remain as basement dwelling empty calorie fiends.”

If it makes you feel any better, it’s actually a smidge better than last season’s potential WAB pf 1.60.

On X, PaintTouches acknowledges GU’s nonconference schedule is “a smidge better than last season’s potential WAB,” but this nonconference schedule is not going to do this #13-ranked-in-talent team—or any other BIG EAST team—any favors if things head toward the bubble.

Here are some links and posts:

Too many B12 presidents/ADs were skeptical on UConn. This falls in line with what we reported last week.

What’s more, sources told CBS Sports that UConn was/is locked into the Big East, per league bylaws, until 2027, not 2026 as previously reported.
