Markus Kerr talks reclassification to 2027, move to Brewster Academy and updates recruitment

July 8, 2025 by Zags Blog

By JAMES MADDEN & SAM LANCE

It’s been a busy past few weeks for class of 2027 guard Markus Kerr.

Kerr, the 6-foot-6, 180-pound guard, recently announced his decision to transfer to Brewster Academy (NH) and reclassify to the class of 2027. He spent his first few seasons of high school hoops in his hometown of Chambers High School (NC).

The guard also recently made the move to finish the AAU slate playing with Team United after beginning the summer playing for Team Thad. Through eight games, it’s paid off, with Kerr averaging 12.5 points and 4.9 rebounds while shooting over 50% from the field.

“I feel like it’s more comfortable, and I feel like I know my teammates way more than I knew them where I was earlier,” Kerr told ZAGSBLOG. “I wanted to go over there and finish strong.”

Kerr believes he’s improved his game and shown coaches he’s gotten better this summer.

“I feel like my catch and shoot, my shooting in general and my on-ball defense is what I’ve been working on,” Kerr said. “And being way more of a leader. I feel like I’ve shown coaches that I can guard 1-4 and I feel like I can be more vocal. When they come see me in July, I can be way more vocal.”

Having recently announced his decision to transfer to Brewster, Kerr is ready to arrive in Wolfeboro and play for coach Jason Smith.

“I’m really excited,” Kerr said. “I’m ready to start playing, and know my teammates better and build chemistry. It just prepares you for college. There’s nothing better than the Nike Scholastic. Just high-level players, there’s competition and every game you got to go out there and play your best.”

On the recruitment front, Kerr has earned a handful of Division I offers and interest from various other programs. Throughout his spring season with Team United, he has received new interest from schools like Marquette, Mississippi State, Oklahoma State, Penn State, Syracuse and Virginia Tech. In a previous interview with ZAGSBLOG, Kerr discussed schools like Auburn, Kansas, LSU, NC State and Tennessee.

With Kerr now being a 2027, there’s a long way to go in his recruitment. He doesn’t have any visits planned right now but will be taking some “eventually” after Peach Jam. Mississippi State is one program that’s talked to him about having him on campus.

Here’s what Kerr said of some of the new players in his recruitment:

Mississippi State: “What I like about their program is that they have dogs. I feel like their coaching is great, it’s tough love and all the coaches are real cool and they get the ball out and play fast.”

Marquette: “They really like how I defend. They like defense, I feel like that’s the message they’ve been sending. It’s coach Cody [Hatt].”

Oklahoma State: “Coach Dana Valentine. They let their guards play real free. Their coaching is really good and they get the ball up and down real fast and they’re really big on shooting.”

Virginia Tech: “Those are my guys. Pretty much, they just let their guards play free and they love to get it out fast and they’re real physical. They like to get a lot of paint touches and make a lot of passes. It’s Kevin Giltner and Mike Young.“

Syracuse: “They’re really big on defense. They’re well-conditioned and they get up and down the floor real fast. They play through the guards and the bigs.”

Kerr was a four-star recruit and ranked as the No. 99 overall player in the 2026 class by 247Sports. He has yet to be ranked as a 2027 prospect. Kerr’s birthday is June 27, 2008.
