Swept, the Hoyas will see the Blue Demons again on Wednesday

Your Georgetown Hoyas (17-14, 8-12) concluded their regular season with an 83-77 loss to DePaul (13-18, 4-16) at Wintrust Arena in Chicago. This defeat marked the second time the Hoyas fell to the Blue Demons this season, resulting in a regular-season sweep. Georgetown hopefully takes some lessons from the game as they head to Madison Square Garden on Wednesday to face not-so-lowly DePaul a third time. Consecutive losses to DePaul to end the season is not the way to build back the program at GU.

In their final regular season game, the Georgetown University men’s basketball team lost to the DePaul University Blue Demons, 83-77, despite 29 points from graduate guard Micah Peavy.

The Hoyas finished the regular season with a 17-14 overall record and 8-12 in Big East play, while DePaul ended at 13-18 overall and 4-16 in conference. Despite outrebounding DePaul 33-29 and forcing six turnovers, Georgetown couldn’t overcome DePaul’s strong shooting performance. The Blue Demons shot 56.6% from the field and 53.3% (8-15) from three-point range, compared to Georgetown’s 42.0% and 34.6% (9-26), respectively.

Micah Peavy led the Hoyas with 29 points (11-19, 4-6 3PT) and 10 rebounds, achieving his sixth double-double of the season. Jayden Epps contributed 17 points (5-17, 3-9 3PT), and Jordan Burks added 9 points and 8 rebounds. Drew Fielder scored 8 points and grabbed 6 rebounds while in foul trouble for most of his 25 minutes. DePaul’s Isaiah Rivera scored 21 points, with four others scoring in double figures..

DePaul led 38-34 at halftime and extended their lead to 10 points in the second half. Epps rallied the Hoyas, bringing them within three points with 1:50 remaining, but they were unable to complete the comeback.

Head Coach Ed Cooley expressed deep disappointment in his post-game press conference, criticizing the team’s lack of physicality and defensive effort. He credited DePaul for their strong home performance and acknowledged Coach Holtmann’s efforts.

Cooley emphasized the team’s lack of energy, effort, and attitude, stating that only Micah Peavy and Jayden Epps performed well. In the post-game press conference, Cooley uses the phrase “piss poor performance” at least six times.

Despite the loss, the Hoyas will have an immediate opportunity for redemption. As the seventh seed in the Big East Tournament, Georgetown will face tenth-seeded DePaul in the #7/#10 game at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday, March 12, at 6:30 p.m.

The game will be broadcast on Peacock. Georgetown fans are hoping for a much-improved performance as the Hoyas seek to advance beyond the first round in the tournament.
