MESA, AZ — Class of 2026 four-star guard Austin Goosby’s family sport may be football, but he’s turning heads on the basketball court.
Goosby — the 6-foot-5, 190-pound guard out of Melissa (TX) — is one of the best shooting guard prospects in his class. He showed why at Nike EYBL Session 1, averaging 11.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game.
“I like to play at my pace, don’t let other people rush me,” Goosby said of his game. “I’m a quiet person on the court, but I get to my spots and try to do what I can do.”
Goosby’s father, Michael Goosby, played in the NFL and his brother, Trevor Goosby, is pursuing the same dream. He currently plays left tackle for Texas. The Longhorns are one of the schools most involved with Goosby.
“[Sean Miller] talked to me,” Goosby said. “And then he came up there to watch one of our practices with an assistant. He’s just turning [Texas] around, trying to get a championship. Obviously that’s the No. 1 goal, but he’s trying to develop me when I get there.”
Goosby has seen Texas’ campus with his brother being there. He’s also taken unofficial visits to BYU, Kansas and SMU. He has no visits planned for this spring/summer at the moment, but he’d like to set officials to BYU, Texas and SMU. All of those schools, plus Kentucky, have been in at Melissa to see Goosby.
Goosby broke down some of those programs:
BYU: “I like coach [Kevin] Young. He’s a really good coach. New there, so he’s turning it around for sure.”
Kansas: “I liked it a lot. Bill Self is a legend up there. So just having met him and knowing him, it’s a crazy surreal feeling. Their style of play is a more get up and down the court, try to push it. I feel like that could fit me.”
SMU: “Having NBA coaches is definitely a big plus there. Coach [Andy] Enfield is a really good coach. Have a couple of Drive Nation players going there too [Jermaine O’Neal Jr. and Jaden Toombs]. They like the program up there. I’ll probably go on a visit, go with them a couple places and see how I like it.”
The four-star would like to see Texas A&M as well this summer. The Aggies reached out with the new staff to re-offer him in late April.
When Goosby starts going on official visits, he’s looking at what coaches can develop him and get him to the next level. Having a family feel around the program will be important too.
Goosby is ranked the No. 27 overall prospect in the 2026 class by 247Sports.
“You could put him in any situation and he will fit,” Melissa head coach Stephen Friar told ZAGSBLOG. “The game is slow for him, and he understands it. He does a great job of knowing what his team needs to be successful and plugging in the holes wherever they’re lacking something. Obviously he’s a great scorer. Very athletic, and a good defender, but his best quality is he is a great teammate.”
