UConn signs Rutgers transfer Cam Spencer: ‘Cam is the perfect addition to our program’

June 9, 2023 by Zags Blog

Cam Spencer is officially a UConn Husky after committing earlier this week.

The 6-foot-4 shooting guard from Davidsonville, Md., graduated from Rutgers University with a degree in labor relations last month after finishing as the co-leader in scoring (13.2) for the Scarlet Knights in 2022-23. He played his first three seasons at Loyola-Maryland and will enter UConn as a graduate student with one season of eligibility remaining.

“Cam is the perfect addition to our basketball program,” UConn Coach Dan Hurley said. “He brings a unique combination of high-level skill and feel for the game, with a fierce competitiveness that has allowed him to enjoy a terrific college basketball career thus far.”

After visiting UConn with his family and watching a workout earlier this week, Spencer decided the defending NCAA National Champions would be a perfect fit for him.

“It really started with my connection to the whole coaching staff,” Spencer said. “Coach Hurley is awesome. He’s a competitor like myself and I’m looking forward to going to war together. Obviously, they had great success last year and I’m looking to help continue that success, helping the team in whatever way I can.”

Spencer started all 34 games for Rutgers last season, tying for the team lead in scoring (13.2), and averaging 3.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists in 31.3 minutes per game. He shot 44.4 percent overall and an outstanding 43.4 percent from three-point range, as well as 89.4 percent from the foul line. His 448 points scored included 72 three-pointers – one of which was a game-winner over then No. 1 Purdue.

“I think that some of my strengths will stand out in UConn’s style of play,” Spencer said. “They have a lot of great movement and they play so well together, with great chemistry. I think that I can come in and hopefully contribute to that.”

Spencer averaged double figures in each of his first three years at Loyola, including 18.9 ppg in his junior season of 2021-22, when he was named to the All-Patriot League First Team as well as the Academic All-Patriot League Team. In his college career, he has totaled 1,296 points, 375 rebounds, and 287 assists.

“Cam is a big-time shooter who also handles and passes well, while playing a disruptive style of defense,” Hurley said. “We cannot wait to get Cam integrated into our basketball family. His veteran leadership will be a welcome benefit.”

Spencer, who expects to join the Huskies’ summer workouts early next week, becomes the 12th scholarship player on the UConn roster, joining grad student Tristen Newton, senior Hassan Diarra, junior Samson Johnson, redshirt sophomore Alex Karaban, sophomores Donovan Clingan and Apostolos Roumoglou and freshmen Stephon Castle, Solomon Ball, Jayden Ross, Jaylin Stewart and Youssouf Singare.
