WE’RE BACK: Lunch Blog Hiatus Leads to Huge Hoya Portal Day

April 8, 2025 by Casual Hoya

NCAA Basketball: Big East Tournament-DePaul vs Georgetown

We can’t take all the credit. Peavy probably deserves some.

For the Georgetown Hoyas faithful, the last few years have felt like wading through molasses. Hope has been a flickering candle in a stiff wind, often threatening to extinguish entirely. For some diehard fans, the light did go out, unfortunately. The sting of missing out on marquee transfer portal recruits (let’s ignore that unnamed player, coach, and conference rival for a while, shall we?), felt like a familiar, disheartening refrain.

Had anything truly changed? Was the climb back to relevance destined to be a slow, agonizing crawl? Did the Ed Cooley and the Hoyas squander their single season year with a once-in-a-decade freshman center? Was limping out of the Crown Tournament like Ed Helms from The Hangover the image fans had to hold onto until next season?

Then came yesterday. A day that felt less like a gentle ripple and more like a tidal wave crashing onto the Hilltop. In a swift and decisive flurry of activity, Ed Cooley and his staff didn’t just add one or two pieces through the transfer portal – they landed four. Four players with the potential to inject immediate athleticism, versatility, and a renewed sense of optimism into a program desperately craving it.

Duncan Powell, Deshawn Harris-Smith, Isaiah Abraham, and KJ Lewis. Four names that suddenly have Hoya fans buzzing with a level of excitement not felt in quite some time. And let’s not forget the recent addition of Langston Love from Baylor, a versatile wing who joined the fold just days prior, setting the stage for this remarkable haul.

This wasn’t a drawn-out saga of campus visits and public deliberations. This wasn’t a frantic bidding war played out on social media. This felt… different. It felt like a targeted, efficient operation where the staff identified their priorities, moved decisively, and secured commitments without unnecessary fanfare. It felt like these players wanted to be Hoyas, and Georgetown, in turn, made them feel like a priority.

Without diving into deep scouting reports just yet, the initial impressions are undeniably positive. These are players who appear to possess the length, athletic tools, and versatility that are increasingly crucial in modern college basketball. They aren’t one-dimensional talents; they bring a variety of skills that could allow Cooley to build a more dynamic and adaptable roster.

It’s still early. The transfer portal window remains open, and the landscape of college basketball is ever-shifting (the revenue sharing NCAA settlement is presumably being finalized as we speak). But yesterday’s GU events felt significant. It felt like a tangible step forward, a clear indication that the program is not content to simply tread water. It felt like the folks in McDonough and the Thompson Athletic Center, whether consciously or not, threw a lifeline to a fanbase yearning for something to believe in.

The quiet celebration from Micah Peavy, a transfer success story in his own right, speaks volumes. It suggests a growing belief within the program, a sense that this group is building something real.

We will, in due course, dissect each player’s game, analyze their potential fit within Cooley’s system, and explore the implications of these additions.

We’ll ponder the potential impact on the team’s immediate prospects and even touch upon the intriguing AAU connections that some of these players bring to the table, hinting at a renewed focus on local recruiting down the line.

But for today, let’s simply savor this moment. Let’s acknowledge the significance of a day that broke the mold, a day that injected a much-needed dose of hope into the Georgetown basketball ecosystem.

The lunch blog is back, under new-but-familiar management, and there’s no better time to be dusting off the keyboards and reigniting the passion for the Blue & Gray (inbox is open for submissions!).

Yesterday wasn’t just a good day for Georgetown Hoyas basketball—it felt like a potentially historic one. The momentum is building. Let’s ride it. Hoya Saxa.
