The Terps added the top uncommitted quarterback to their 2025 recruiting class.

Maryland football made a splash in the high school recruitment world Friday, as local four-star quarterback Malik Washington announced his commitment to the program live on 247Sports. He is the Terps’ highest-ranked recruit since edge rusher Rico Walker in 2023, according to the 247Sports Composite.

Washington attends Archbishop Spalding in Severn, Md., and is the No. 23-ranked quarterback in his class and the No. 8-ranked player from Maryland, per the 247Sports Composite. He is the Terps’ third four-star recruit in the class of 2024, joining running back Iverson Howard and linebacker Carlton Smith.

Syracuse, UCF and Virginia Tech were the other three finalists hoping to land the 6-foot-4, 215-pound quarterback.

The offensive system and ability to play early in his collegiate career were two primary factors that influenced Washington’s decision, he told 247Sports. Seven quarterbacks on Maryland’s roster have eligibility in 2025, including Billy Edwards Jr., MJ Morris and Cameron Edge.

“If you can be great, why not be great at home,” Washington said. “If you really one of them guys, you’ll be a Terp.”

Washington was named 2023-24 Baltimore Sun high school boys Athlete of the Year after shining on both the football field and basketball court. During his junior season, Washington threw for 2,093 yards and 21 touchdowns, while adding 225 yards and six touchdowns on the ground. He also led the Cavaliers to a 10-2 record and their second straight Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference championship.

Following Washington’s addition, the Terps’ 2025 recruiting class includes 15 players, with Washington being the lone quarterback. The class, which was ranked No. 51 nationally heading into Friday, is now ranked No. 35 in the country.
