After a rough first couple of years at the helm for Maryland, head coach Mike Locksley finally seemed to find his stride in 2022. Now the Terrapins are rewarding him for it.

According to Ross Dellenger of Sports Illustrated, Locksley and the Terps have agreed to terms on an amended five-year contract. Per the report, the new deal will give him an average salary of $6.1 million starting with $5.5 million this year and featuring a $300,000 annual raise.

Locksley had been making $4 million per year, tying him with Rutgers’ Greg Schiano as the lowest-paid head coach in the conference.

Maryland have gone 15-11 over the past two seasons with two bowl wins in the process. This past year they won eight games for the first time in over a decade.

Mike Locksley came highly regarded as a top assistant at Alabama when he was hired in 2019. But in his first two seasons he went just 5-12.

Things finally started to turn around for the better in 2021 when he led Maryland to a 6-6 regular season before knocking off Virginia Tech in the Pinstripe Bowl to finish 7-6. It was Maryland’s first bowl win since 2010.

Maryland’s win over NC State in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl this past year marked their first back-to-back bowl wins in nearly 20 years.

Suffice it to say, things are looking up for Maryland under Locksley.
