This is the Maryland Minute, a short story followed by a roundup of Terps-related news.
One of the stars on the Maryland women’s basketball team is receiving national preseason recognition heading into the 2021-22 season.
Junior guard Ashley Owusu has been named to this year’s Nancy Lieberman Award watch list for the country’s top point guard, the program announced on Monday. Owusu is one of 20 players named to the list after helping lead the Terps’ top scoring offense last season.
In just her sophomore season under head coach Brenda Frese, Owusu won the 2021 Ann Meyers Drysdale Award Winner for the nation’s top shooting guard and she was named to the 2021 Associated Press Third Team All-America as well as being named a 2021 All-Big Ten First Team selection. Owusu averaged 17.9 points and 5.9 assists per game on a team that averaged just over 90 points per contest.
Maryland was recently given a No. 4 ranking in the AP Top 25 Preseason Poll and Owusu will once again be one of the main players featured on both ends of the court heading into the season, which starts against Longwood Nov. 9.
