MM 8.10: Jalen Smith and Aaron Wiggins shine in NBA Summer League

NBA: Phoenix Suns at San Antonio Spurs

This is the Maryland Minute, a short story followed by a roundup of Terps-related news.

Two former Terps have excelled in the NBA’s Summer League recently with Jalen Smith and Aaron Wiggins making noise in their debuts.

Smith, who plays for Phoenix Suns, recorded a double-double in his team’s 73-72 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday. The forward collected 15 points and 12 rebounds in the defeat, which were both game highs. The Suns’ No. 10 overall pick in 2020 also played in 29 minutes, another game high.

He followed up that debut with a 12-point, 15-rebound performance across over 30 minutes of action in a 63-57 loss to the Utah Jazz on Tuesday.

Despite the Suns losing both games so far, Smith was very noticeable when it came to his rebounding. His aggressiveness inside would not be denied and he used his length to his advantage to grab a few extra rebounds.

Wiggins, on the other hand, managed to have a strong night of his own for the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday. The No. 55 overall pick in this year’s draft played for 23 minutes against the Detroit Pistons and tallied 13 points off a 6-for-11 day from the field. Wiggins was a plus-7 on the court and had five rebounds to go along with three steals.
