5 Teams That Could Trade For Super Bowl Champion Running Back

September 18, 2023 by Last Word On Pro Football

Cam Akers Trade

Los Angeles Rams running back Cam Akers is reportedly on the trade block. The former second-round pick and one-time Super Bowl champion was a healthy scratch last week, and Akers himself didn’t see this coming. With Kyren Williams taking full control of the starting job, Akers is reportedly on the trade block, and there should be a few teams interested in acquiring the Florida State product.

Now, we’ve been down this road with Akers before. Last year, the running back began the season behind Darrell Henderson and was the subject of similar trade talks. It’s clear that for whatever reason, Sean McVay doesn’t trust Akers to be a big part of the offense. Akers suffered an Achilles injury back in the 2021 offseason and has never fully recaptured his old form. That being said, he still finished the 2022 season with 786 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on 188 attempts, good for a respectable 4.2 yards per carry. While he probably isn’t ever going to turn into a three-down workhorse, he’s good enough to be a part of a running back committee.

5 Teams That Could Trade For Cam Akers

Baltimore Ravens

In what’s becoming something of an annual tradition, the Baltimore Ravens running back room is going through an injury crisis. J.K. Dobbins is done for the year, and while Gus Edwards is an adequate starter, they could use another body to pair with Justice Hill and Melvin Gordon. Cam Akers is a clear upgrade on those two and a trade would solve Baltimore’s depth issue at the position.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Rachaad White is a good receiving back, but the jury is still out on whether or not he can consistently run between the tackles. If he’s not up for the job, the 2-0 Buccaneers will have no choice but to turn to undrafted free agent Sean Tucker. Seeing as Tampa Bay could actually compete in the NFC South, they probably want a more proven backup to split carries, and a Cam Akers trade would accomplish that goal.

Indianapolis Colts

Jonathan Taylor is still on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, and there is a very real chance that he never plays another snap with the Indianapolis Colts. Zack Moss played well in Week 2, but we know that he is nobody’s idea of a NFL-caliber starting running back. The Rams were reportedly interested in a Jonathan Taylor trade, so perhaps they could send Cam Akers and a pick to the Colts for his services.

Miami Dolphins

Raheem Mostert is a perfect fit for Mike McDaniels’ offense, but he’s also not the picture of health. With Jeff Wilson battling an injury of his own, the Dolphins are perilously thin at running back and could use someone like Cam Akers to secure some additional depth.

Kansas City Chiefs

Through two weeks of action, the Kansas City Chiefs do not look like their usual dominant selves. While this issue will probably take care of itself with time, the fact of the matter is that this team needs better weapons if they want to compete in a talented AFC. A Cam Akers trade wouldn’t singlehandedly fix Kansas City’s offense, but it would help.
