Breaking: Could The Eagles Trade This Super Bowl Champion?

June 17, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Despite a surprising emergence this past 2024 campaign, the Philadelphia Eagles may trade safety Reed Blankenship before the 2025 season. According to a source, the Eagles are eyeing extending the defensive back, who has become one of the best secondary pieces to this roster that already contains Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean. However, the team might have to move carefully in the following seasons as they want to allocate as much cap space for Jalen Carter when he’s eligible for a contract. The good news is that Blankenship might not demand the highest-paid deal in the area of Detroit Lions Kerby Joseph, but you never know what might happen in the league.

Originally selected as an undrafted rookie in 2022, the former Middle Tennessee product became arguably the best safety in this unit ahead of younger talent like Sydney Brown and Andrew Mukuba. The presence of Blankenship comes at the right time, but since the team has been trying to trade tight end Dallas Goedert, could the Eagles wind up embracing a full rebuild? This seems like a stretch, but since they already won a Super Bowl, they might not be fighting for much these next few seasons, especially when they already have a dominant roster both on offense and defense. It is all speculation, but many deals tend to fall apart, and it shouldn’t be a surprise that the Eagles end up trading Blankenship, given they’ve been able to develop more superstars in recent memory.

Potential Destinations

Los Angeles Chargers

Despite having one of the best secondaries last season, it will look dramatically different this upcoming season. The Chargers lost Kristian Fulton, but made it up by signing Donte Jackson and Benjamin St-Juste for depth in the backend. Between Derwin James and Alohi Gilman, the Chargers don’t need a safety, but it wouldn’t hurt to ferociously build upon what they have. After extending Elijah Molden this offseason, it should be obvious that the Chargers might want to continue building the secondary unit.

They know James and Gilman are getting older, and perhaps, Blankenship could win the starting job for the Chargers. Maybe Molden and Blankenship could form one of the most dangerous safety threats to give the Chargers a lot of depth to work with.

Baltimore Ravens

Meanwhile, the Baltimore Ravens should be in dire need of a safety. After losing Ar’Darius Washington to a gruesome injury, the Ravens could use a safety to start sooner rather than later to help support 2025 draft pick Malaki Starks. They can’t afford to bet on him eating up most of the defensive snaps, and it would be safer to pair him with Kyle Hamilton, who became one of the best safeties in the league. Imagine Blankenship and Hamilton on one team; it would save them from their cornerback department, which has been disappointing this offseason after they just signed Chidobe Awuzie to be a potential starter alongside Marlon Humphrey and Nate Wiggins.

Carolina Panthers

However, the Carolina Panthers have a promising roster even though they’re nowhere near contenders. They should have a winning record at least after restructuring their defense this offseason. Despite signing Trevon Moehrig, they could make another upgrade like Blankenship that would take over starting duties instead of Nick Scott.
