After his latest arrest, the Dallas Cowboys may move on from All-Pro kick returner Kavontae Turpin before the 2025 regular season. According to the breaking news, the wide receiver was arrested this weekend for weapon and marijuana charges. Originally selected as an undrafted rookie, the former TCU product spent his entire career with the Dallas Cowboys since entering the league. Even though it might be less likely that Dallas will release him, it’s always a possibility that it might happen if he continues to get into more trouble. Owner Jerry Jones loves to give athletes second chances and an example of that was Randy Gregory and Greg Hardy.
Turpin has become the main contributor as a punt returner coming off his best season last year, helping the Cowboys defeat the Washington Commanders despite the injuries they had on their roster. The reason why the team could move on is due to the new dynamic duo between wide receivers, CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens, who they got in a trade this offseason. While they need Turpin solely for the punt returns, it’s not a huge need when the team also has Jalen Tolbert and Jonathan Mingo in their depth chart. It’s a long shot for Dallas to part ways with Turpin, but for the sake of this article, let’s say the team catches everyone by surprise and winds up releasing him despite his contract extension.

Best Fits
Kansas City Chiefs
If any NFL team can get an athlete on the right track after a few off-field issues, it’s the Kansas City Chiefs. The team doesn’t need another wide receiver since they have Xavier Worthy, Rashee Rice and Marquise Brown all being the main contributors. What they lack is a punt returner, and Turpin, having the same size and speed as them, could be a fit for the roster.
Los Angeles Chargers
Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Chargers should feel desperate for another pass-catcher. Quentin Johnston doesn’t seem too promising, while Mike Williams is washed up. Even though Turpin is more effective in specialist plays, he has had a few plays as a reliable pass-catcher in the aerial attack in the past. He could pair with 2024 draft pick Ladd McConkey and form one of the most dangerous slots in the league.
New Orleans Saints
However, the New Orleans Saints need all of the weapons in the world if they want to see either quarterback Tyler Shough or Spencer Rattler shine. The team lost Derek Carr due to retirement so General Manager Mickey Loomis will have no choice, but to rebuild. Even though the Saints have two solid pass-catchers like Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed, there’s no guarantee that veteran Brandin Cooks will replicate the same energy. Turpin could perhaps ferociously upgrade the unit with his presence as a WR4.
Baltimore Ravens
The Baltimore Ravens still need to think about the longevity of this passing unit for quarterback Lamar Jackson. Yes, they have DeAndre Hopkins, who they signed this offseason, but he only has really just 2-3 more good seasons left in the tank before retiring. Turpin won’t take the jobs of Rashod Bateman or Zay Flowers, but the team could use him as another slot threat.
