After spending the last two full seasons with the New York Jets, the team has cut wide receiver/return specialist Xavier Gipson. According to the breaking news, the Jets are moving on from Gipson after his costly fumble against the Pittsburgh Steelers, which led them to win the close matchup against the Jets. Head Coach Aaron Glenn told reporters the same day after the loss that mistakes like that won’t guarantee them a spot on the roster for the foreseeable future. Later, it was revealed that the Jets released him, so maybe it was perceived as a statement move.
Originally selected by the Jets in 2023, the former Stephen F. Austin product had a few thrilling moments in his rookie campaign, recording a 65-yard punt against the Buffalo Bills, earning him the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week. Gipson isn’t going to be the best playmaker or change a roster drastically if he signs a contract with a new team. However, since he’s still young and may accept a one-year deal, there should be plenty of interest here.
One mistake shouldn’t define an athlete’s career on the field, but it might take a bit before teams sign him. Here are four teams that could roll the dice on the playmaker.

Possible Fits
Baltimore Ravens
The Baltimore Ravens have one of the league’s best wide receivers, but it doesn’t hurt to add more firepower to their special teams unit. Justice Hill, with new practice squad member JT Gray, is the frontrunner for the special teams room, but adding Gipson in the same mix wouldn’t hurt. Lamar Jackson has been open to throwing the football, but with the way Derrick Henry and Zay Flowers have been running the ball, they should probably stick to their trickery plays.
Gipson joining Baltimore would allow them to draw up more plays down the field when it comes to the run.
Kansas City Chiefs
Meanwhile, the Kansas City Chiefs are in dire need of a wide receiver. They might have no other choice but to get a cheap replacement in Gipson while Xavier Worthy gets back to full health. The Chiefs have found success before in the “end around” plays, and someone like Gipson could thrive in those situations. He won’t take away snaps from JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marquise Brown, but help jumpstart this offense in the right direction.
Los Angeles Chargers
However, the Los Angeles Chargers found some life in their passing offense, but the biggest question for them is whether they can all stay consistent. Many should expect that out of Ladd McConkey and veteran Keenan Allen, who always show up in critical moments. The chemistry is still developing for receivers like KeAndre Lambert-Smith, Tre Harris and Quentin Johnston for Justin Herbert, so this is one to watch. Gipson won’t start for this offense, but it gives this run game another speedy option to depend on while Hassan Haskins slowly gets into the groove of the backfield unit.
Dallas Cowboys
After giving Kavontae Turpin a new contract, the Dallas Cowboys aren’t in the market for a return specialist. However, it wouldn’t be the worst idea to sign Gipson to upgrade the pass offense, especially after losing Jonathan Mingo. Between CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens, and Jalen Tolbert, Gipson could create some space to help Dak Prescott sling it in the air.
