The NFL Players Association released a statement from the family of Jacoby Jones, who died at age 40.

Jones’ family shared that he passed away peacefully at his New Orleans home. They asked for privacy and prayers as they grieve his loss.

“We want to express our gratitude for all the kind thoughts and support you have shown us during this challenging time,” the statement said. “Your ongoing support and respecting our privacy means a lot to us.”

According to KPRC’s Aaron Wilson, Jones died overnight in his sleep. No cause of death has been announced.

Jones scored 14 receiving touchdowns in 128 career regular season games, but two postseason scores made him a Baltimore Ravens legend. The 2012 All-Pro sparked an overtime win over the Denver Broncos with a 70-yard catch-and-score before adding a 56-yard touchdown in their Super Bowl XLVII win.

The star special teamer also returned four punts and six kickoffs for touchdowns, including a 108-yard score in Baltimore’s Super Bowl victory over San Francisco.

“We are completely heartbroken to learn about the passing of Jacoby Jones,” the Ravens said in a statement. “Jacoby had the unique ability to connect with everyone he encountered. His charisma, joy, and love created a one-of-a-kind presence that could light up any room or brighten any dark day.”

Jones began his career with the Houston Texans, where he tallied a career-high 562 receiving yards in his fourth of five seasons. The team also sent its condolences following the tragic news.

“We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Jacoby Jones,” the Texans wrote. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time.”
