Former Super Bowl Champion Seeking NFL Comeback – 3 Logical Fits

April 21, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Former Kansas City Chief defensive tackle Isaiah Buggs is seeking an NFL comeback this upcoming offseason. According to reports, the defensive tackle was facing charges after spending, later getting released last year from the Chiefs, until it was clear. However, now, the charges have been dropped, and the defensive interior lineman is hoping for a new opportunity in the league. Typically, chances don’t come quickly, even though the charges are gone, as the teams will be very cautious betting on him.

Originally selected in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft, the former Alabama product began his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but was quiet for the majority of those three seasons, leading to his release in 2022. Buggs was a journeyman spending some time on the Raiders practice squad, but he finally got a new opportunity with the Lions and did handsomely well for the team’s defensive pressure. After posting 46 tackles, two passes defensed, and a forced fumble, the Lions gave him a new contract, but didn’t do much for the defense. The defensive tackle had another chance at revival, signing with the Kansas City Chiefs’ practice squad, where he won his first Super Bowl while riding the bench.

Buggs might not start right away with his new team, but there are always teams out there looking for lineman talent to bolster their units. He could join these three teams and work his way up the ranks this season.

Potential Destinations

Los Angeles Chargers

On paper, this could be the best business move for the Los Angeles Chargers, even though they have all the salary cap space to spend in the world. The 2024 campaign was a lot better than most were anticipating, but that doesn’t mean the Chargers should stop improving. After losing Poona Ford, the Chargers were only able to retain Teair Tart on another one-year deal to keep this defense ferociously powerful. Meanwhile, the team only signed Da’Shawn Hand as a replacement, but he isn’t adequate enough to keep this defense competitive.

While Buggs might not do much to help push for the Chargers back into the postseason, the team never fails to bring out the best in a defensive pass rusher. No one knew Ford and Tart would have a breakout year, so it looks like they have the same energy for the 2025 season. If that’s the case, the Chargers should sign Buggs to serve as a rotational lineman to get after the quarterback.

Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens need more bodies in their defensive pass rush. The team has been reluctant to add some capable replacements despite losing Malik Harrison to their rival, the Pittsburgh Steelers. Broderick Washington and Travis Jones can’t produce the same results as star Nnamdi Madubuike, so the team should add another guy, even as a backup. Buggs is the perfect athlete for that role since signing Yannick Ngakoue last year was proof that they need more experience in their unit.

Carolina Panthers

Last season, the Carolina Panthers spent most of their time ensuring the offense was adequate for quarterback Bryce Young. It was long overdue, but the Panthers have been adding talent to bolster their defense. After signing Tershawn Wharton to assist Derrick Brown’s return, the team could use another big man like Buggs in the trenches in a service role.
