Greg Roman says James Proche has 'really made a statement' so far during training camp

August 7, 2021 by Ravens Wire Leave a Comment

The Baltimore Ravens have seen second-year wide receiver James Proche step up to the plate in a big way over the first week of 2021 training camp. He’s been everywhere on the field, making spectacular catches, consistently getting open, and showing that he’s deserving of a spot on Baltimore’s final roster.

When asked about Proche and the camp that he’s having, offensive coordinator Greg Roman showed that he’s been impressed by what Proche has brought to the table so far, praising his hard work and performances during practice.

“…I think he’s doing a really good job. He’s been working hard all offseason. He got here before anybody else, I think, and he’s been working, working, working. He wants the ball. He’s got that attitude that he wants to make an impact, and it shows with his play. So, he’s just doing a really good job – showing up every day, making plays, knowing what he’s supposed to do and just performing very well. There are always things to work on, but so far, he’s really made a statement.”

One of the key 2021 training camp storylines that has been highlighted by many is the battle for the Ravens’ sixth wide receiver spot. At the moment, it doesn’t seem likely that Baltimore keeps more than six wideouts on their final roster. With Marquise Brown, Rashod Bateman, Sammy Watkins, Devin Duvernay, and Tylan Wallace all but locks to make the team, the sixth spot looks to be between Proche and Miles Boykin.

Proche didn’t get many opportunities to perform during his rookie season, as he only caught one pass (on three targets) for 14 yards. However, with the way Proche has been lighting up training camp so far, not only is he making a strong impression to make the final 53-man roster, but he’s also showing that with his play so far, he deserves more opportunities during the 2021 season. If the former SMU star continues to string together strong practices, it’s hard to imagine the Ravens letting Proche go.
