Gus Edwards Reacts To The Injury To JK Dobbins

The Baltimore Ravens lost starting running back J.K. Dobbins to a season-ending knee injury over the weekend. As a result, back-up Gus Edwards has been thrust into the lead ballcarrier spot with just over a week to go until the start of the regular season.

Although he might not have extensive experience in the NFL, Edwards sounds prepared for the massive opportunity in front of him.

“It’s a great opportunity,” Edwards said, via the Ravens. “It’s really unfortunate what happened. My feelings go out to J.K. I know how hard he’s worked this season. Just to see how hard he’s been practicing, it’s real unfortunate. I’m ready to do whatever’s asked of me. I’m ready to step up.”

Edward signed a two-year extension earlier this offseason after three productive seasons in the Ravens system. He’s posted over 700 rushing yards in each of his three years in Baltimore and is now poised for an even bigger year as the lead back.

In 2020, Edwards racked up career-highs in carries (144), rushing yards (723) and rushing touchdowns (6). Although he hasn’t developed a reputation as a pass-catcher, he hauled in nine receptions for and impressive 129 yards last season.

Edwards will be called upon often this year in the Ravens run-heavy system. Alongside quarterback Lamar Jackson, the 26-year-old will be in for a heavy workload on the ground without many viable back-up options behind him. The Ravens have said that Ty’Son Williams will step up to help fill the void left by Dobbins, but it’s unclear exactly what he’ll bring to the mix.

Baltimore has yet to finalize its running back group ahead of league’s final cut deadline on Tuesday.

The Ravens will open up its 2021 season on the road against the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday, Sept. 13. The game will air on ESPN as a past of the Monday Night Football doubleheader.
