Justin Houston thinks Ravens can maximize his skill set

August 9, 2021 by Ravens Wire Leave a Comment

The Baltimore Ravens brought in edge rusher Justin Houston on a one-year contract in hopes that he can provide some pass rush to their defense. With 97.5 career sacks in 10 NFL seasons so far, Houston has shown that he can certainly make an impact in that regard.

Houston was asked about how he thinks Baltimore will utilize his skill set, and the veteran seemed confident that the team can maximize it.

“I just think they’re going to maximize … They’re going to see on film – from what I show at practice – what I’m good at, and I think they’re going to put me in a position where I can maximize my talent. Like I said, any football player, if you know football, you know defense, that’s what you want to do.”

There are plenty of different roles that Houston could be put in by the Ravens, but it seems likely that they could space out his snaps to keep him healthy and refreshed for a full 17-game season plus any playoff matchups that come after it. Houston can still play the run effectively, but with other players on the roster who can do the same such as Pernell McPhee, he’ll likely see more time as a pass rusher where he can be matched up one-on-one against an offensive lineman as opposed to a run stuffer.

Houston still has plenty left in the tank to contribute to Baltimore’s defense. He was arguably the best free agent left on the market, and it was a smart move for the Ravens to swoop him up. If his skill set is indeed maximized by Baltimore, opposing offenses will have a hard time handling the Ravens’ defensive unit as a whole.
