Four down, 23 more to go
The preseason is in the rearview and the regular season is now two weeks away. With that in mind, every NFL franchise must trim their rosters down to 53 players by 4 p.m. EST on Tuesday. The Baltimore Ravens started the cutdown process on Monday by making four roster transactions.
As expected, second-year running back J.K. Dobbins was placed on season-ending injured reserve after an MRI revealed he suffered a torn ACL. They also terminated the contract of veteran offensive lineman Michael Schofield and released wide receivers Siaosi Mariner and Devin Gray.
Both Gray and Mariner were brought in to provide depth at the position for practice and the preseason. Neither were expected to make the roster barring long term injuries to expected starters or primary backups.
The termination of Schofield might come as a surprise to some considering the Ravens’ lack of depth at offensive tackle. Schofield has starting experience, possesses the positional versatility to play guard and played well in the preseason. He could be an ideal candidate to be brought back after the team has done some short-term injured reserve roster finagling.
Head Coach John Harbaugh said Monday that the Ravens like the current state of their running back depth chart and implied that Dobbins’ injury essentially guarantees running back Ty’Son Williams a spot on the active roster.
“If you do the math, he’s there,” Harbaugh said. “He’ll be out there playing.”
