As the federal government shutdown drags into its sixth week, millions of Americans who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, could soon see their benefits delayed or suspended.
President Donald Trump has urged GOP leaders to eliminate the Senate filibuster to force an end to the shutdown, while Democrats continue to push for broader negotiations. With food insecurity on the rise, the question now is whether SNAP recipients should be shielded from the fallout of future shutdowns.
In response to the crisis, Gov. Wes Moore declared a state of emergency in Maryland on Thursday and announced $10 million in emergency food assistance due to the federal shutdown.
And on Friday, two federal judges ruled nearly simultaneously that the Trump administration must continue to pay for SNAP,
