Despite signing him in free agency this offseason, the Dallas Cowboys could cut former second-rounder Javonte Williams before the 2205 regular season. According to a source, they made a prediction that the team could cut ties with the running back before he has a chance to step on the field in a Cowboys uniform. Last season, the Cowboys had one of the worst run games in the league and were hoping that former running back Rico Dowdle would revive the unit. However, that didn’t happen, so the Cowboys made a few moves by signing Williams and Miles Sanders as solid veteran options while drafting Jaydon Blue, who’s been receiving a lot of hype during the offseason.
It looks like Williams might not be a part of those plans as the Cowboys will need to trim their 53-man roster after the preseason. As of this posting, there is no running back on the team’s current depth chart who scored a touchdown with the Cowboys, so that’s concerning for this offense. Williams will likely find his roster spot in danger if Blue emerges and may keep Sanders in the backend for veteran relief. Originally selected in the 2021 NFL Draft, the former North Carolina product was considered one of the worst signings in free agency.
The Cowboys could always reconsider their decision and make adjustments to their roster. It’s hard to imagine Williams is a starter in the league, but these five teams could give him a new opportunity as a backup.

Possible Next Teams
New Orleans Saints
The New Orleans Saints might have to depend on the run game this upcoming season since they have an inexperienced quarterback room. Alvin Kamara is one of the league’s best running backs, but he could use the depth behind him. Jamaal Williams got cut earlier this offseason, so there’s an obvious hole in their backfield department. Kendre Miller has been a disappointment, and Javonte Williams could sign with the Saints, even on a one-year deal, to bolster this unit to get those short yardages if he becomes available.
Carolina Panthers
Meanwhile, the Carolina Panthers’ offense is coming together very well this year. No one’s taking Chuba Hubbard’s starting, but if he wants to be great, he should get all the help in the backend of this unit. Rico Dowdle fills an obvious hole after Jonathon Brooks’ gruesome injury, but adding Williams in the mix to provide some competition could work well in Carolina.
Los Angeles Chargers
However, there has been speculation that the Los Angeles Chargers could trade Najee Harris during this upcoming season, despite just signing him during the offseason. 2025 draft pick Omarion Hampton has a lot of promise, and there’s a reason why they selected him in the first round. The Chargers might see their future in him, and if that’s the case, they could sign Williams to provide some support to speed up the production of the backfield.
Kansas City Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs running back room will look interesting this upcoming Fall. Isiah Pacheco has a lot to prove this year, but if he doesn’t perform up to standards, they might have to stick with running it up with Kareem Hunt. They brought in Elijah Mitchell for possible relief, but they could do the same with Williams on a one-year deal himself if he’s available on the market.
Baltimore Ravens
There is a lot of hype for Keaton Mitchell’s regular-season debut. He hopes to hold down stomping grounds behind Derrick Henry, who just signed a new contract. Justice Hill won’t ever take his place, and is more used in screen situations. With that, they should sign Williams to provide some relief if Mitchell doesn’t perform well.
