Veteran cornerback Malcolm Butler signed a one-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals this offseason. Now, he is reportedly considering retirement.
On Monday night, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported that Butler, a two-time Super Bowl champion, is dealing with an unspecified “personal situation” and it has led him to contemplate retiring.
“Part of that situation led him to be away from the facility in the last week for a period of time,” Garafolo said. “He is still trying to work his way through that, and right now, retirement or stepping away from the game is on the table.”

The 31-year-old Butler made the New England Patriots as an undrafted free agent out of West Alabama in 2014. As a rookie, he famously intercepted Russell Wilson at the goal line to clinch Super Bowl XLIX for New England.
Butler would go on to make the Pro Bowl in 2015 and earn second team All-Pro honors while winning another Super Bowl with the Patriots in 2016. He lasted one more season in New England before playing for the Tennessee Titans from 2018-20.
Hopefully Butler is able to return to the Cardinals at some point soon. But whether he does or he doesn’t, whatever is going on in his personal life is most important.
