3 Washington stars rank among ESPN's top 100 players

August 31, 2021 by Redskins Wire Leave a Comment

The Washington Football Team has one of its better rosters in years. In the NFL Network’s recent top 100 players list, two Washington stars made the list in defensive end Chase Young and guard Brandon Scherff.

Young was ranked No. 61 while Scherff came in at No. 98.

ESPN recently released its list of the top 100 NFL players in 2021, and this time, three Washington stars were included. Unlike the NFL Network’s list, ESPN got it right by making sure wide receiver Terry McLaurin was on the list.

Here is where all three Washington players finished in ESPN’s rankings:

  • 31. Chase Young
  • 70. Brandon Scherff
  • 73. Terry McLaurin

Young and Scherff receive a nice bump in ESPN’s rankings. McLaurin finally receives his due as one of the best wide receivers in the NFL.

Former New York Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum had the following to say about Young:

Washington edge rusher Chase Young is at No. 31 this year, but I think he could be in the top five next year and considered the second-best defensive player in the NFL behind Aaron Donald. He is a long, explosive and disruptive pass-rusher coming off of a productive rookie year with a lot of talent around him. This sets him up perfectly to be a top-five player and the premier edge pass-rusher in the league.

Young won the NFL defensive rookie of the year in 2020 and is looking to have an even bigger season in 2021. His ranking seems fair.

Scherff was a first-team All-Pro at guard in 2020. McLaurin has quietly been one of the NFL’s top wide receivers the last two seasons but hasn’t received as much national attention in part because of Washington’s quarterback issues.

No other Washington player made the top 100. Players like Montez Sweat, Jonathan Allen and William Jackson III are likely the closest players to making the list.
