A look at the series history between Washington and the Buccaneers

November 13, 2021 by Redskins Wire

The Washington Football Team looks to get back on track in Week 10 after four consecutive losses. Unfortunately, Washington’s opponent is the defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Washington and the Buccaneers have played some memorable games over the years. The most recent game, a Wild-Card battle from January, featured Washington hosting the highly-favored Bucs at FedEx Field.

The Bucs won the game, 31-23, and eventually went on to win the Super Bowl. Washington was arguably Tampa Bay’s stiffest challenge on its run to the playoffs.

Overall, the two have played 24 times, with each team winning 12. They’ve met three times in playoffs. Remember the 2005 wild-card game? That’s when Sean Taylor picked up a fumble and returned it 51 yards for a touchdown. It’s also the game where Taylor was ejected for spitting in the face of Tampa Bay running back Michael Pittman. Washington won that game.

Then, what about the NFC divisional round game from the 1999 season? The Bucs won this one after an errant snap cost Washington a chance at a go-ahead field goal late in the game.

There’s also the “you like that” game. This is the game where the Buccaneers jumped out to a 24-0 lead in the second quarter, and Washington, led by Kirk Cousins, completed the biggest comeback in franchise history en route to an unbelievable WFT victory.

The Bucs are strong favorites in this game. However, if we’ve learned anything in the recent meetings between the two teams, you can probably expect the unexpected.
