It’s generally a good idea for NFL teams to have figured out who their kicker is by now. After all, the 2021 season commences a week from this Thursday. But the Detroit Lions are having a bit of trouble at the position.
The Lions released both of their kickers, Randy Bullock and Zane Gonzalez, on Tuesday, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. They’re now without one ahead of the 2021 season. No, we’re not kidding. Detroit doesn’t have a kicker on their 53-man roster as of Tuesday afternoon.
We’ve seen this story before. Of course the Lions will add a kicker before the 2021 season gets going. But it’s not a good sign that they haven’t figured out the position just yet. In other words, don’t have much faith in the Lions’ kicking game this upcoming season.
This is shaping up to be a disaster.

There’s probably a plan here, though. The Lions might be working the system.
It’s highly likely both Randy Bullock and Zane Gonzalez clear waivers. That would allow the Lions to re-sign one of them after Tuesday’s deadline for teams to cut their rosters down to 53 players. Detroit could then move one of its players in the 53-man roster to the IR for some of the season.
It’s actually a pretty smart move that’s been used before. It’s unclear if that’s what the Lions are planning on, though.
Maybe Detroit just isn’t impressed with Bullock or Gonzalez and wants to find a new kicker. The Lions had better hurry. The 2021 season is right around the corner.
