Earlier this afternoon, Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer made headlines for his comments about vaccinated vs. unvaccinated players.
“Everyone was considered,” Meyer said. “That was part of the [considerations such as] production, let’s start talking about this, and also is he vaccinated or not? Can I say that that was a decision maker? It was certainly in consideration.”
Every coach in the NFL likely had a similar mindset, but none verbally acknowledged that part of the team’s decision-making. Following Meyer’s comments, NFL insider Albert Breer shared a story from an anonymous general manager from earlier in camp.
“On cutdown day, figured this’d be a valuable story,” Breer said on Twitter. “Was w/a GM during camp. He showed me how, on his free-agent board, unvaccinated guys were marked, then said, ‘Those guys might as well not even be up there.’ Reality: Tough sledding ahead for unemployed unvaccinated players.”

Meyer could be in trouble for his comments. According to a report from NFL insider Mark Maske, the NFLPA’s George Atallah said Meyer’s comments are “a concern and we are going to look into it.”
However, it’s abundantly clear the first-year NFL head coach is just saying what every other coach – and general manager – is thinking.
As the well-known phrase goes, a player’s best ability is availability.
